“From the bush to the sea”
This month Potters Needs Gallery is featuring art works by Wallerawang painter Charlie O’Mahony. For something completely different to our usual exhibitions we are focusing on beautiful paintings, with our normal ceramic pots taking a well deserved break!
Charlie was born in the fishing town of Penzance (UK) and much of the influence for the authentic seascapes in this collection can be traced back to the hours he spent exploring the Cornish coast as a youth.
Charlie immigrated to Australia in 1967 and quickly developed a deep love for the Aussie bush. This fondness for the ever changing colours of rural Australia is captured with precision in the beautiful landscapes in this exhibition.
Charlie has always had a love of painting, however it was only after he retired from his career as a history high school teacher that he had the time to fully embrace this passion. His creations come to life in his studio, located in the peaceful Central Tablelands. (Originally working from an old disused shearing shed on the property!)
Preferring to work with oil and occasionally acrylic, Charlie drew inspiration for this exhibition from his immediate surrounds: the breathtaking Blue Mountains, the lesser known but equally majestic Capertee Valley and the beautiful countryside surrounding Oberon.
Victoria Theyers, owner of Potters Needs Gallery says “I’m so looking forward to hanging Charlie’s works, as it breaks from our traditional pottery exhibitions which focus mainly on ceramics.”
If you are visiting the Central West or Blue Mountains make a detour to Oberon and call into the Gallery situated only 5 minutes from the main street.
Opening hours are Saturday and Sunday 10am to 4pm with other times by appointment. Call Victoria on 02 6336 0411 for more information or bookings.
“From the bush to the sea” exhibition opens on Saturday 17th March at 3pm and runs until May 2012.
